Brocksbushes Farm is one of Northumberland’s finest family-owned farms with strawberry picking and a brand new farm shop. I’m here to explain exactly why you need to plan a visit!
Just outside of Corbridge in the beautiful county of Northumberland is the family owned Brocksbushes Farm; a popular attraction for all ages especially those with young children! Brocksbushes Farm has recently re-opened after an incredible redevelopment of the main building and so the farm is no longer just the North-East’s premier ‘Pick Your Own’ attraction but also for a go-to destination for its farm shop, its restaurant as well as its play barn for children.
History
The origins of Brocksbushes Farm date back to 1979 when Billy Dickinson and his Mother bought the farm and straight away offered pick your own raspberries before the family started growing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. For over 40 years, the Dickinson family have created something that brings joy to so many others and now, with the brand new re-development, we can expect great things from the farm in the future!
BROCKSBUSHES FARM
STRAWBERRY PICKING AT BROCKSBUSHES FARM
Strawberry picking is actually something that we’ve been wanting to experience with our daughter but of course we’d been waiting for the right age. It turns out that this summer worked out perfectly. Evelyn is two and a half now, seemingly fully independent and in need of fun activities where she can do her own thing which is where strawberry picking comes in. With the grand re-opening of Brocksbushes Farm came plans to head up to Northumberland and have a family and friends day out.
Between February and April, the equivalent length of 300 football pitches worth of strawberry plants are planted and are normally ready for harvest throughout summer (ordinarily between June and September) but I’d highly recommend checking the farm’s website for up to date news and expected harvest dates.
There were so many different fields to choose from but apparently field 9 was the one where we would find plenty of strawberries ripe for picking. There were hundreds of them, all raised up nicely in planters, and Evelyn loved hunting out the largest and reddest strawberries to add to her little basket.
Entry to the fields is now £2 per person with under 3’s free of charge. On top of that you pick up a basket, either a regular or large size, and off you go to pick your fruit. The basket is weighed at the end and you pay off weight (including the basket. I was a little nervous as Evelyn kept adding and adding to the basket as I saw that the larger one was estimated to cost over £14. Thankfully our strawberries only came to £4.80 for a pretty much full regular sized basket. I was pleasantly surprised and they’ve lasted a good few days so far since we’ve been home. To be fair, it’s a surprise that they’ve lasted this long as they’re absolutely delicious!

THE BRAND NEW FARM SHOP
Whilst the fields may still be producing the finest fruit as they have done over the last forty years, its the buildings at Brocksbushes Farm that have undergone an incredible transformation. The wood clad main buildings house the new farm shop where you can expect to find fresh fruit and vegetables, a deli full of local cheeses and cured meats, a butchers with some of the freshest looking meat I’ve ever seen, a milkshake dispenser plus loads of other foodie delights, homewares and toys. Basically, even if you’re not looking to buy something you’re almost certainly going to come away with a few treats. We tried to eat in the new restaurant but it was extremely busy so we settled for freshly made sandwiches and a vanilla milkshake for lunch followed by stocking up on burgers, cheeses, bread and I finally got my hands on some Honest Toil olive oil at a decent price too!

COURTYARD KITCHEN & PLAY BARN
These are two areas that I didn’t get chance to experience at my last visit to Brocksbushes Farm but I’m pleased to say that the play barn, with over four levels of soft play for the children, will be open from 16th August. We will almost certainly be back to let Evelyn burn off some energy whilst we enjoy a coffee in the cafe!
The Courtyard Kitchen also looks like it serves up really good food for breakfast and lunch. When we visited, on a busy Sunday, there was around a 45 minute wait for food but that was prime lunch time – not great planning by ourselves. The restaurant uses local produce as much as possible and serves up breakfast until 11:30am (think farmer’s breakfasts, buttermilk pancakes and plenty of egg dishes) before switching to the main menu from 12pm onwards (think sandwiches, toasties and paninis plus burgers, pies and scones too!
GETTING HERE
You’ll find Brocksbushes Farm just off the A69 just outside Corbridge in Northumberland. The farm is accessed via one of the exits on the roundabout where the A68 and A69 meet. Thanks to its location, it’s really easy to get to if you drive – it’s only 15 miles to the west of Newcastle and 26 miles north west of Durham.
Google and Apple Maps work perfectly but, just in case, the full address is Brocksbushes Farm Shop, Stocksfield, Northumberland, NE43 7UB.
If you don’t have access to a car you’ll be pleased to know that you can get the 685 bus from Newcastle directly to a stop outside the farm. It only takes 35 minutes too so it’s really not bad even if you fancy leaving the car at home for a day!
OPENING HOURS
Monday to Saturday – 8:30am to 5:30pm
