Looking for a simple guide to street art in Townsville? Here you’ll find where to see the best pieces of artwork and, of course, lots of photo inspiration!
Townsville is a coastal city situated in Northern Queensland, Australia, approximately 350km south of Cairns. Often seen as a stop-off point simply to visit the beautiful Magnetic Island or the Great Barrier Reef, Townsville is deserving of a few days of your time. The city offers one of the most beautiful esplanades in Australia. You’ll struggle to find somewhere as nice for a sunset stroll; palm trees as far as the eye can see and Magnetic Island just off-shore. However, in between the esplanade and the giant red rock that towers over the city, you’ll discover some amazing works of street art in Townsville.
I love street art thanks to Melbourne’s impressive collection but I was not expecting to see anything on that scale again especially not in Townsville. The street art in Townsville is very good and is actually encouraged by the local council. The council have actually created a walking trail which will ensure that you don’t miss any of the main works. It was only by chance that I picked up the map but I’m so glad that I did! My favourite was the gigantic crocodile with a turtle on it’s back (I’m serious) with Castle Hill in the background!
Even if you don’t use the map, just wander the streets and you’ll stumble upon all sorts of artwork. Most of the artwork is situated on both Sturt and Ogden Streets. You’ll probably find new designs too as local artists keep updating the walls. If you don’t want to miss any, I’d definitely recommend using the map; just download the PDF and keep it on your phone or print ahead of time. Hopefully the pictures below will show you that there’s more to Townsville than just a big red rock and the esplanade.
The street art in Townsville is definitely worth checking out if you’re in the city and, in some ways, its better than Melbourne. It’s not something that you’d expect and it was such a nice surprise!
