A Sneak Peak at the Park Head Hotel in Bishop Auckland

I recently had a quick sneak peak at the Park Head Hotel in Bishop Auckland and it’s time to show you exactly what’s on offer ahead of its 1st February opening.

The regeneration of Bishop Auckland continues with the iconic Park Head Hotel receiving the latest restoration treatment. The Auckland Project has already transformed the County Durham town of Bishop Auckland and I’m very excited to see what’s in store at this hotel, bar and restaurant.

I recently spent some time getting to know the star attractions of the Auckland Project and, if you have time, you can read more about my visit here. Spoiler alert; I loved it.

The Park Head Hotel in Bishop Auckland

You’ll find the Park Head Hotel on the road from Spennymoor to Bishop Auckland where it has stood empty for far too long. I’m sure that many locals will have fond memories of visiting whether for a night away, a Sunday Lunch or a wedding reception so it’s great to see the regeneration continuing here.

I was invited down for a quick sneak peak whilst the finishing touches are put in place ahead of the 1st February launch. Read on to find out exactly what to expect.

The Park Head Hotel offers 38 en-suite rooms including king-sized, twins, suites (with a separate lounge – yes, they’re huge!) and some that are pet friendly too. The rooms are tastefully decorated, modern, clean and light. They’re also just generally very roomy which I love as there’s nothing worse than having to squeeze around the bed in a little boxy hotel room. You’ll find all the usual amenities in each room including a TV, tea/coffee making facilities, plug sockets next to the bed (!) and toiletries.

In terms of the price you’re talking from about £90 per night obviously dependent on day/time of the year/type of room but that’s really good value for money. Since Covid-19, I feel that hotel rooms have suddenly become far too expensive so I’m glad that the Park Head Hotel has thought carefully about their room rates. Right now, they’re offering a room, with dinner and bed and breakfast for just £129 – you can’t complain about that.

Talking about food, there will be a bar and restaurant too which is open to all not just guests of the hotel. What’s great about the restaurant is that the chef’s use locally sourced ingredients including many from the walled gardens of Auckland Castle just a few miles away. Having looked at the menu, there a few things that jump out at me that I cannot wait to try; the spiced cauliflower steak and obviously the Park Head burger though the question is…will the burger make its way into my list of the best burgers in the North East?

During the day, you can grab a panini or a scone as well as all the usual hot drinks. I love that they serve a range of black and herbal teas from Brew Tea which I first discovered down in Manchester. You couldn’t possibly open a restaurant in the North East of England without a Sunday Lunch offering and the Park Head Hotel seem to have got that covered. I’m already sorting a date for a return visit just to try that roast pork, apple sauce and crackling…

Overall, I was really impressed with my brief visit to the Park Head Hotel in Bishop Auckland and I know for certain that I’ll be recommending it as a place to stay. It’s actually perfect for us when we have people visiting with it only being down the road!
