Whether you’re looking for a luxurious spa resort, a place to entertain the kids or a conveniently located hotel allowing you to explore, my guide to the best places to stay in Paphos will help you get the best out of your trip to Cyprus.

Cyprus is an ever-popular holiday destination for approximately 4 million people each year and around 36% of those head to the west to the Paphos. Cyprus offers warm weather all year round thanks to its Mediterranean climate and caters to those looking for golden sand beaches, charming old towns, traditional food, pine tree topped mountains and waterparks for the kids. When I say Cyprus attracts all types of visitors, I really mean it!

I’ve visited Paphos now over a number of years and I love just how diverse it is. Paphos features a UNESCO World Heritage Site with thousands of years of history waiting to be explored yet manages, almost seamlessly, for its historic side to coexist with its more ‘touristy’ side. So yes, you’ll find British bars and Elvis tributes entertaining nightly but I promise Paphos is certainly worth a visit. It’s also a great place to base yourself for trips across the island such as to Limassol or up into the Troodos Mountains.

Every time I’ve spent time in Paphos, I’ve stayed somewhere different which I think helps a lot when coming to write this guide as it can get a little tricky knowing exactly where to stay especially for the first time visitor. I’ve therefore separated Paphos out into six distinct areas and included hotel recommendations for each; some of which are certainly the best places to stay in Paphos if not Cyprus.

1 – KATO PAPHOS

Kato Paphos, or Lower Paphos, is what I would consider the ‘main’ area of the city. It includes the harbour, the castle, the archaeological site of Nea Paphos and lively bars and great places to eat. If you’re looking to be in the centre of it all, this is the place to stay. I’ve extended the remit to the south east slightly along Poseidonos Avenue and to the north from Kings Avenue Mall to the Tomb of the Kings.

2 – POSEIDONOS AVENUE – GEROSKIPOU

Poseidonos Avenue stretches along south east from the centre of Kato Paphos for more than 3km to Rikkos Beach in Geroskipou. From Danea’s Triangle onwards (where the Crocodile Pub is), Poseidonos Avenue becomes a much quieter road full of beach front hotels and apartments before reaching the Paphos Aphrodite Waterpark and a shortcut through to Paphos airport. Hotels have long called this area home and it’s one of the more popular locations to stay in Paphos for good reason. You have stunning hotels with access direct to the Mediterranean sea and popular watersport activities but are only a lovely half an hour or so’s walk along the promenade into Paphos itself. The 611 or 631 buses run regularly here too and will take you straight into Kato Paphos.

Most of the hotels here are all inclusive (some are a little tired and dated) but there are a few bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity though the reality is central Paphos is where you’re likely to be heading for bustling nightlife and good food. For me, this is a great area to stay in Paphos given the proximity to the centre yet it’s far enough away to feel as though you aren’t on a city break!

3 – OLD TOWN

The Old Town of Paphos sits up high on a rocky outcrop overlooking the glistening Mediterranean sea. Thankfully, the Old Town has undergone a transformation since Paphos was named European Capital of Culture in 2017. It’s now a pleasant area of Paphos to spend not only a day or two but perhaps even your entire holiday. You’ll still find the traditional market (now uncovered and in little shops) alongside trendy bars and coffee shops, traditional Cypriot restaurants and contemporary street art. Staying in the Old Town of Paphos allows you to experience traditional Cypriot charm whilst only being a stone’s throw (610 bus) from the harbour and all of Kato Paphos’ amenities.

4 – CHLORAKA / KISSONERGA

Chloraka and now Kissonerga are an extension of Paphos’ resort offerings along the E701 coast road on the west coast of Cyprus. Once you pass the shipwreck of Demetrios II out at sea, you’ll find a wide variety of accommodation many with access to sandy beaches or rocky coves. Along here, you want a hotel that does it all as many won’t have a wide selection of bars and restaurants within walking distance. I’d recommend hiring a car or relying on public transport to get back into Paphos.

5 – CORAL BAY

Coral Bay has long been an alternative tourist resort to staying within Paphos itself and features a 600m crescent of pristine golden sand with smooth seas and stunning sunsets. You’ll find a bustling strip of restaurants and bars along Coral Bay Avenue that will cater for every visitor; whether you fancy a sports bar, live entertainment or a quiet dinner with friends. Sala Thai in Coral Bay is one of my favourite places to eat in Paphos.

6 – AGIO GEORGIOS

Agio Georgios is a hidden gem in Paphos; a lovely, quiet little harbour village around 20km / 30 minutes drive from the centre of Paphos. The village is also the gateway to the Akamas Penisula and its raw natural beauty. The Avakas Gorge Natural Trail has long been a favourite hike of mine in the west of Cyprus and can easily be reached from here. There isn’t much by way of tourist infrastructure here but that’s part of its charm. You’ll find a quiet beach, sea caves, a few restaurants and few people to speak of.

If you’re staying out here, I would highly recommend hiring a car for easy access back into Paphos.
