Let’s head to the Mediterranean for this edition of my ‘On The Streets’ series. Here’s a look at my collection of photos from Malta taken during a five night winter break.
Welcome to the latest edition of the series that showcases destinations through my photography alone. This time round we’re in Malta on a family holiday where we spent five nights at the Malta Marriott Resort & Spa. We didn’t plan on doing too much, we just fancied one last little getaway before winter really kicks in, but we did manage two days of exploring in Valletta, ventured out to the silent city of Mdina, drank a lot of coffee and spent afternoons in the rooftop pool!
My ‘On The Streets’ series takes us across the world with short posts focusing solely on my unique style of travel and street photography. The series will never be complete but here’s a look at where I’ve covered so far:
So, if you’re ready, let’s take a look at what I managed to capture in Malta; specifically Valletta, Mdina and around Sliema, Balluta Bay and St Julian’s.

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY IN MALTA
THE DETAILS
As with the majority of my trips these days, our winter break in Malta was a family holiday and therefore I did not focus primarily on photography. Save for one morning photo walk from the hotel to Sliema and back, all of these shots were captured whilst just wandering around with the family. I somehow manage not to let photography get in the way of family time taking literally a few moments to capture something that might quickly catch my interest.
In terms of my camera gear, I took both my Fujifilm X-T5 and X100VI. In terms of lenses for the X-T5, I took far too many lenses as usual; 18-55mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.4, 56mm f/1.2 and 50-140mm f/2.8. I primarily either used the X100VI with its fixed focal length of 23mm or the 18-55mm f/2.8 on the X-T5. I’ve mentioned over the last year or two that I’m really enjoying using a zoom lens recently especially on family holidays where I don’t want to be constantly thinking about changing lenses. I really should however just take less lenses away with me to avoid getting bogged down in questioning which focal length might work best. I find I take a few different lenses so that I can capture images for the travel blog too so that, in time, I can create a variety of different guides. The 35mm f/1.4 is a lens that I can’t travel without, I love it, and the 56mm f/1.2 is a unique lens that is rising back up to one of my favourite lenses. This was the lens that I had fixed on my X-T5 for my early morning photo walk. Finally, the telephoto lens continues to be one of those lenses that I know I shouldn’t be bringing with me but I love the compression it brings allowing me to get a few unique images. Whether that is worth the heavy camera bag, I’m about 60% yes it’s worth it at the moment haha!
All of the colour images are JPEG’s using my ‘Summer Negative’ recipe with some finishing touches added; I will soon be publishing my thoughts on adding some slight edits to Fujifilm recipes – I’ve been doing it since 2018 and I think it just adds that little bit extra to my photos. Sometimes you just have to adjust exposure, the horizon and add a little more contrast. It doesn’t change just how much work the Fujifilm recipe does here, the colours are all straight out of camera.
