A charming town nestled between the Bay of Kotor and dramatic mountains, Herceg Novi in Montenegro offers so much for a travel photographer. This is my visual guide to street photography in Herceg Novi.
For this entry in the ‘On The Streets’ series, I’m taking you to the beautiful town of Herceg Novi in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. This was our first visit to Montenegro and I just wish we had visited sooner! Despite being a small country, you’ve got UNESCO listed old-towns drenched in history, dramatic mountain ranges and stunning coastlines along the Adriatic Sea and within the Bay of Kotor. Oh, and you get that beautiful Mediterranean climate too; what’s not to love?
This was a family holiday with our daughter Evelyn, 18 months old at the time, which worked out to include Evelyn’s fourth and fifth countries on her list as we flew into Croatia and travelled across the border! 5 countries before 2 isn’t bad!
Anyway, let’s turn the focus back to photography and Herceg Novi in particular. The small town of Herceg Novi is nestled between the Bay of Kotor (with views out to the Adriatic Sea) and Mount Orjen so, as you can imagine, it gets steep very quickly. It’s only a matter of miles away from the borders of both Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Once you have a look through the photos below, you’ll see exactly why I fell in love with this charming seaside town.
In terms of the photos, there were many obviously beautiful vantage points across the town and a few ‘must-capture’ locations including the Forte Mare (Sea Fortress), Kanli Kula (another fort at the highest point) as well as along the promenade.

THE DETAILS
First up, is the camera – the Fujifilm X-T5. I’ve used this as my main camera since its release and I have no reason whatsoever to consider anything else. I think it’s perfect.
In terms of lens choice, I was on a family holiday so I took a good range of lenses with me. I wanted to put the Fujifilm 18-55mm f/2.8-4 lens through its paces as it was pretty new to me but of course I couldn’t not take the Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4. I left the Fujifilm 18mm f/1.4 behind which was possibly a little crazy of me but it meant I could bring the Fujifilm 16mm f/1.4 out of a career break.
I’ve explained all of my thoughts on the ‘kit lens’ here but I was blown away by just how dependable it was for travel photography. I’m definitely not a zoom kind of guy, I love all of my primes but on a family holiday such as this, with limited time for photo walks and proper exploring, it worked perfectly.
