On The Streets: Funchal, Madeira

Welcome to Madeira; a tropical island in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Africa with soaring mountains and endless greenery. Let’s head however to the capital city for my visual guide to street photography in Funchal.

You’ll find Funchal, the capital of Madeira and the cultural centre of the island, nestled between the ocean and the tallest peaks on the island. It’s a city full of narrow streets, lively bars, quirky artwork covering old doors, cable cars and incredible views wherever you look. On top of all of that, if you take your time to simply observe you’ll find locals going about their ordinary day to day lives in the midst of the visiting hoards of tourists.

I found Funchal, and Madeira as a whole, a photographer’s paradise and hopefully you’ll enjoy these photos as much as I do! I visited Funchal as part of a press trip with Jet2holidays and Visit Madeira and therefore some of the below photos were captured during activities organised for us. The majority however were taken across a few free afternoon wanders around the city. I love nothing more than an aimless wander with my camera in hand!

These photos were all captured with the Fujifilm X-T5 and a combination of the Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4, Fujifilm 18-55mm f/2.8-4 and the Fujifilm 50-140mm f/2.8.
