This is my visual guide to street photography in Tokyo; the sprawling metropolis full of bright lights, modern skyscrapers, peaceful parks and, well, just about everything. Tokyo is unlike no other city on Earth and photo opportunities are everywhere you look!
We’ve covered Osaka and Kyoto in my Japanese edition of my ‘On The Streets’ series and now it’s time for the main event; Tokyo. The capital of Japan, the largest city in the world, one place that I have long dreamed of both visiting and capturing with my camera.
My ‘On The Streets’ series takes us across the world with short posts focusing solely on my unique style of travel and street photography. The series will never be complete but here’s a look at where I’ve covered so far:
Ok, now it’s time for a virtual wander around the streets of Tokyo. This is my take on street photography in Tokyo with the Fujifilm X-T5.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY IN TOKYO
THE DETAILS
We spent eight nights in total in Tokyo though three of those were at Tokyo Disney Resort. We were travelling with our little daughter so of course we had to let her experience the magic of Disney for the first time. Don’t worry though, I know you’re not here to see Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea through my lens (but if you are, I will share some images soon in a separate post!), so we’ll just stick to the beautiful streets of Tokyo.
Visiting Tokyo came at a time when we were lagging a little after spending a week in Osaka and Kyoto. We knew Tokyo would be big but honestly it was just on another level. Many of our plans went out of the window, being far too optimistic especially when we had to cater for a child too. I’ll spend some time in the future setting out exactly what we got up to and full guides but, for now at least, my highlights were spending early mornings in Meiji Jingu with the light filtering through the trees, walks through Omotesando (probably my favourite area of Tokyo) and treating the inner geek in me in Akihabara.
A word of warning, I haven’t managed to get anywhere near finishing off my Japan photos so think of this as perhaps a not quite complete collection of photos from our time in Tokyo. Also, I was away with the family so the images are really just snapshots of our day to day explorations rather than having time to specifically focus on photography. I’ll add more photos as and when I get chance!
On The Streets: Osaka
On The Streets: Kyoto
As I stated in my previous two posts, my top two lenses used to capture Tokyo were the Fujifilm 18-55mm f/2.8-4 and the Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 but the Fujifilm 50-140mm f/2.8 really came into its own when stood on top of Shibuya Sky. Oh, and yes, taking a huge heavy telephoto on a family trip wasn’t the best of ideas but the images I captured throughout the two weeks were definitely worth it!
You can find a detailed post on everything I took to Japan right here!
All of the colour shots are JPEGs, pretty much straight from the Fujifilm X-T5, with my Classic Negative recipe. I used RAW + JPEG which meant I could convert every single image to my Acros recipe and see Japan in glorious black and white.
